Module Learning

When I started out in UCS 1001 I felt that I was generally a confident communicator however I felt like my report-writing skills could be improved, personally the Paul-Elder framework was instrumental in helping me evaluate information with clarity, precision, and depth. This structured approach enabled me to analyse tasks from a “higher” level which significantly enhanced the quality of my academic work.

I also relearned the PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) structure, something taught to me during my secondary school days for subjects like history and social studies but never really touched on again after that, relearning this in UCS 1001 was a breath of fresh air in how I approach objective writing and enabled me to organise my points logically and concisely, especially for assignments like the reader response and technical report.

APA 7th edition citation style was such a pain to learn at the start but after a while, I saw the use and what an asset it was in the aspect of learning to attribute sources correctly which in turn enhanced the credibility and professionalism of my reports. It also helped me appreciate the importance of academic integrity and precision in research.

Professor Blackstone’s expertise and engaging teaching style made a significant impact on my learning. His ability to simplify and relate concepts coupled with his insightful feedback made the learning process both enjoyable and effective.

To continue improving, I plan to practice critical thinking through writing exercises and actively participate in discussions. This module has provided me with essential tools for effective communication, and I am committed to applying them in future academic and professional contexts.

Project Learning

For my research project, I focused mainly on report-writing skills and some polishing of teamwork. Initially, I struggled with report writing as it was really not my forte, but after applying critical thinking principles, I improved my ability to analyse and streamline thoughts in reports.

The PEEL structure was at the core of the final report ensuring my arguments were clear and logically organised. The emphasis on APA 7th edition citations in this module proved invaluable as it allowed me to cite sources seamlessly, strengthening the quality and credibility of the report. This experience highlighted the importance of structure and proper referencing in academic writing.

Working in a team with diverse backgrounds also refreshed and advanced my ability to lead teams. This not only improved the project outcome but also helped me grow personally by reminding me of the importance of patience and collaboration.

Professor Blackstone’s guidance during the projects was crucial. His focus on critical thinking and systematic problem-solving encouraged me to approach challenges analytically without feelings that could so easily cloud one's judgment.

The projects done in UCS 1001 have deepened my appreciation for the interplay between communication and teamwork. Moving forward, I plan to continue applying critical thinking frameworks and structured writing techniques to future group projects, ensuring effective collaboration and high-quality outcomes.
